You Don’t Have to Be an Expert to Make a Big Impact

Judges are the heartbeat of every speech and debate tournament. When you volunteer to judge, you’re not just filling a role—you’re investing in young people who are learning to think critically, speak clearly, and engage respectfully with ideas.

You don’t need a background in speech and debate. If you can listen, evaluate fairly, and encourage students, you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

Why Judge?

✔ Make a meaningful difference in a student’s life
✔ Encourage confidence, communication, and character
✔ Enjoy a front-row seat to impressive, thought-provoking speeches and debates

Many of our students will remember the encouragement and feedback they received from judges for years to come.

What Does a Judge Do?

As a judge, you will:

  • Watch students compete in speech or debate rounds

  • Use a provided ballot to score performances

  • Offer brief, encouraging written feedback

  • Help determine which students advance in the tournament

We provide simple training, clear instructions, and on-site support so you’ll feel confident stepping into your role—even if it’s your first time.

Who Can Judge?

We welcome:

  • Parents

  • Grandparents

  • Community members

  • Professionals

  • College students

  • Teachers and educators

No prior experience in speech and debate is required. If you’re willing to learn and show up, we’ll equip you.

Time Commitment

You can serve for:

  • A half day

  • A full day

  • Or specific rounds based on your availability

Even a few hours makes a huge difference.

What We Provide

  • Judge orientation & quick-start training

  • Clear ballots and instructions

  • A friendly judge lounge

  • Hospitality (snacks, drinks, meals as available)

  • A supportive team ready to help you every step of the way

What You’ll Walk Away With

Many judges tell us they leave encouraged, inspired, and surprised by how articulate and thoughtful these students are. It’s meaningful, life-giving volunteer work—and genuinely fun.
